If you want an easy way of understanding, basically Hanteo=Nielsen SoundScan and Gaon=RIAA, the sales they track are also the same as what those two groups track.
- Shipments of albums from distributor to retailers, as reported by distributors.
- Example: Albums shipped from Dreamus, Kakao M, Genie Music, etc. to retailers like Synnara, Hottracks, YesAsia, etc.
- Used by Golden Disk Awards and some of the other end-of-year awards.
- Must be a member of the Korean Music Content Industry Association (KMCIA) to have albums reported on Gaon.
- SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment and other management companies DO NOT do their own reporting to Circle.
- CAN have a margin of error.
HANTEO
- Retail sales of albums from retailers to consumers, as reported by the retailer's inventory software, plus an estimated amount generated by Hanteo's sampling and data-mining system.
- Example: Albums bought by customers at YesAsia, Kpoptown, Ktown4U, Leesmusic, Synnara, etc.
- Used by Music Bank K-Chart and other weekly award shows.
- Must be a Hanteo member shop to report sales data to Hanteo.
- Hanteo member shops cover approximately 85-95% of the sales in Korea. The new Q&A section on Hanteo 2.0 now states 95%, which actually includes member stores located overseas or selling overseas.
- Sales are updated by the installed inventory system to Hanteo.
- CAN have a margin of error.
